Avengers: Age of Ultron, 2015

I found it surprising that despite my love of action super heroes, my reaction to this one was somewhat nonplussed.  I don’t know what to attribute it to other than perhaps the fact that I had not seen the previous Avenger movie(s), and therefore did not seem to connect with the group as a whole, or perhaps it was the excessive action altogether that had the strange effect of making me yawn despite myself.

All things considered, this is a movie for the die-hard fans of the Avenger franchise that is by turns a blur of faces in close-ups or bodies in longer shots. The gang of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, some dude with arrows called Hawkeye, computer-assisted leviathan, the Hulk, and the token girl called Black Widow, played by the lovely Scarlett Johansson.  Rounding out the A-listers was Samuel L. Jackson, who as Nick Fury, had an Old Testament vibe and a black leather coat straight out of Shaft’s closet.

The problem with waiting too long to write a movie review is that one tends to forget the story (if it’s forgettable, of course!), and that in itself ought to be an indication of my interest and love of the movie, which is saying something without saying too much…  Suffice to say that a movie like this one would have an audience of those who would love it, hate it, or simply find themselves yawning involuntarily.  I, alas, found myself in the latter-most category.
