May 3, Jeremiah 17:5

5 God’s Message: “Cursed is the strong one who depends on mere humans, Who thinks he can make it on muscle alone and sets God aside as dead weight.”

Jeremiah 17:5 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

That’s right:  listen up, won’t you — God is not “dead weight”.  Nay, God is the end-all and be-all of our existence, so you might wish to give him more than just a passing thought in your daily deliberations.  Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, is mincing no words here when he says, “cursed is the strong one who depends on mere humans”. We often feel quite self-sufficient in our own intellect, our self-possessed minds and bodies, our sense of self and agency, and our incessant planning abilities.  And yet, no matter how carefully we might wish to arrange things, it is foolish to discount the hand of God in every aspect of our lives.  Where do you find yourself on this matter, gentle reader?
