“While the soldiers were looking after themselves, Jesus’ mother, his aunt, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene stood at the foot of the cross. Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her. He said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that moment the disciple accepted her as his own mother.”
John 19:25 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.
What is the point that Jesus is making here? To me, it is quite simple: conventional relationships are not the strongest and most meaningful ones always. Nay, one may have no relation to another by blood or marriage, and yet such a relationship might be the one that you have been charged with to make something of — to give, show, care, love, tend to, and cherish. Are you aware of such a relationship in your life? What are you doing about it?
