“Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. But God put his love on the line for us by offering his Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to him.”
Romans 5:8 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.
This is the mind-blowing part of it all, you see: one can understand selfless sacrifice for one that you love, but to give up your child or even your own life for a total stranger, nay a worthless stranger, well, that just doesn’t make any sense at all. And therein, my friend, lies the beauty of God’s love for us. While we were yet in sin and undeserving of anything, and certainly despite all our self-righteousness, this is a God who reached down to extend his love for us. Do you see it? Do you get it? Do you accept it?
