May 15, John 3:16

“This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son.  And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.”

John 3:16 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

We’ve all been under a death sentence, that’s just how it has been since the beginning of time.  Not of our own personal doing, but because of the nature of sin that originated at the very beginning of time owing to which we were born into a fallen world.  So, given those facts, who among us is predestined or elected to forgiveness of sins and life eternal?  Who is deserving, you ask?  Nobody, actually.  But the one who believes is the one to whom the gift of forgiveness and salvation is offered freely.  Do you want it?  Will you believe?  What do you have to lose?  Nothing!  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.  And why, you ask?  Why, what?  Why should you believe?  Well, why shouldn’t you?  Do you wish to live a life of guilt and uncertainty, wondering about your existence, and waiting for an afterlife that you know nothing of?  Believe, my friend!  Believe, and receive the gift of love, aka, forgiveness and life.
