So, if you go to southeast Texas, actually anywhere in Texas, I’d say you’d find a lot of good Tex-Mex cuisine. And so invariably, we had our share of lots of fresh and tasty meals with a strong Tex-Mex flavor during our recent holiday in the lovely city of San Antonio, Texas. Like the fajitas we found at this little restaurant called the Republic of Texas. With an outdoor dining option on the edge of the river, it happens to be yet another popular place, especially in the evenings. The fresh tortillas and the accompanying meats, veggies, and all the condiments that came with it (fresh salsa and sour cream) made for gloriously mouthwatering fajitas. Oh, and the margaritas weren’t too bad either. See for yourself in the slideshow below:

Late Night Post-Concert Celebrations At The Neighborhood Grille
Two-and-a-half hours of listening to the most fantastic live music ranging from several marching band tunes to Tchaikowsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F Minor will leave you physically ravenous at the end of the concert. Trust me. I would know, given that I was a thrilled spectator in the audience of just such a concert last evening. And so, one can only imagine how much more ravenous the players in that concert might have been. Well, I would know that too! Given that two of those players belong to me as I was one of the proud parents witnessing the incredible performances that they were part of. A post to aforementioned incredible concert is right here.
Well, so where does one go when its getting late and you want a quick bite? You go to the local neighborhood grille, of course, aka, Applebees. Their Appetizer Sampler is perfect for four people because there’s two of everything: Mozzarella Sticks, Boneless Hot Chicken Fingers, Quesadilla Corners, and lots of Nachos with four kinds of Dips, including a Hot Spinach-Artichoke one. And as for desserts, well, the Triple-Chocolate Meltdown and the Maple Butter Blondie hit the spot right-on.
And what did we wash all this down with? Why, the Classic Mojitos, of course. Oh, and Diet Sodas for the teetotalers, of course.
The Clarkston Union Woodshop: A Great Place to Eat!
So, where do you go to eat when you drive up an hour and a half to meet an old friend? You go downtown, of course. And head out to the most famous little restaurant on Main Street– the Clarkston Union. But then you realize there’s a 45 minute wait for a table, and so you decide to head down the road to the next best place: The Clarkston Union Woodshop.
And you’re pleasantly surprised. Because you find the place just as charming and hopping with the Sunday afternoon crowd of locals and others perhaps like me who’re visiting with friends and family in the area. The place is truly charming, and when the waitress brings out the menus, we learn that the restaurant has recently been christened a 2011 Restaurant of the Year as per the Detroit Free Press. Not bad at all!
And what do we order? A super-sized Burrito that comes with sweet potatoes, spinach, spanish rice, black beans, cheese, and a dollop of sour cream. And a Blackened Catfish Sandwich that comes with a Red Cabbage Slaw and Black Beans and Rice on the side. Mmmm!
Here’s what it all looked like. But the truly best part was catching up with my dear friend, Anu. There’s nothing like facetime. Facebook doesn’t even come close!
Traffic Jam & Snug: A Cozy Spot for Lunch
Last week some friends and I headed out to a local favorite restaurant, Traffic Jam & Snug for lunch. It was my first time there, and I wasn’t disappointed! The old-world charm of the bar and restaurant, and most certainly the food, made for a lovely luncheon experience. Not to mention the company of my friends that enhanced it even more so. See for yourself what I mean. That Shirley Temple wasn’t mine, but I was told it was very good. The entrees were: Grilled Chicken Greek-style Salad, A Lasagna, and mine was the Quiche. Other sides were a House Salad, A Lentil Soup, and Sweet Potato Fries. High marks for all!
Souper Salad! Yes, There's A Place Like That!
So, if you ever find yourself in the great state of Texas, and find yourself on I-35 northbound somewhere after Austin but before Dallas, you might want to check out this little restaurant called Souper Salad! in a strip-mall which is where you’ll find exactly that: soups, salads, and even some other not-so-bad things that hit the spot when you want to get in and out quick-and-easy. Oh, and did I mention it’s an all-you-can-eat bar– or a series of bars, I should say: for the salad, soup, nachos, and soft-serve icecream.
Haifa Falafel: Get Your Hummus On!
So, if you want the freshest middle-eastern food with a decidedly Israeli flavor to it, you have to go to Haifa Falafel. On the southeast side of town, this little restaurant has been in business for less than two years but has become a huge favorite with people coming in from as far as Detroit for their simple but elegant dishes. Here’s what we found today: Hummus & Pita, Lentil Soup, Tabbouli, Fattoush with Shawarma, Chicken Shawarma Pita, Mini Falafels, Haifa Falafel Wrap, Majadera, Stuffed Grape Leaves, and Harisi for dessert. Check it out:
Middle Eastern Fare a la La Pita
So, what’s the best part of a working lunch-meeting? The food, of course! Take a look at this glorious spread catered by La Pita, the most popular Middle Eastern restaurant on campus. The not-so-exciting meeting was spiced up considerably thanks to the food. What’s on display, and what went down is what you see below in the slideshow. More details on what’s what on the plate follows the slideshow.
So, what’s on the plate? Chicken Shawarma, Beef Shawarma, a Green Salad with a Tahini Dressing, Hummus, Almond Rice, Falafel, GrapeVine Stuffed Leaves, Pickled Radishes, Turnips, and Jalapeno Peppers, Red Beets, Tabbouli (finely chopped parsley, onions, tomatoes), Majadera (red lentils), and for dessert, Almond and Pistachio Baklava.
El Camino Real: A Mexican Delight (Great for a Birthday Dinner!)
And where might you find the freshest Mexican cuisine in town? The El Camino Real, of course! The experience starts from the moment you pull into the parking lot. You are beckoned to a tavern-like establishment with landscaping that is reminscent of terrain in the Southwest.
You then enter into a most vibrant interior so splashed with the brightest colors so as to compete with the colors of the food that will soon be served to you. See for yourself the slideshow below. And then scroll down for a few more thoughts about this dining experience.
So! I highly recommend the Mango Margarita; the Toquitos Platter (that came on a bed of shredded lettuce and tomatoes, and with the freshest Guacamole and a huge dollop of Sour Cream [SC]); the Pollo Vallarta, a perfectly seasoned and grilled chicken and shrimp dish also served with a similar salad as the toquitos along with the Guac, SC and Red Rice; and finally a delectable dish the name of which escapes me but which tasted not too different from a mutton-curry and looked not too dissimilar from it either. This also came with the Red Rice and with a big serving of the Refried Beans and a side of Mini-Tortillas kept warm in the aluminum foilwrap. Oh, and the fresh Chips-and-Salsa that you are first served are on the house, and are a great way to start the dinner experience.
