March 29, John 12:13

“The next day the huge crowd that had arrived for the Feast heard that Jesus was entering Jerusalem. They broke off palm branches and went out to meet him. And they cheered: Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in God’s name! Yes! The King of Israel! Jesus got a young donkey and rode it, just as the Scripture has it: No fear, Daughter Zion: See how your king comes, riding a donkey’s colt.”

John 12:13 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

Who rides a donkey?  Certainly not a king, right?  Well, here’s some news for you:  Jesus rode a donkey.  You think he was sending a message?  Ya think?!  Of course, he was.  The message was:  this is a new day, and this is what divine royalty looks like.  Conventions are turned upside down, you see.  The first shall be last, and the last shall be first; the donkey is a worthy animal for a king, and palm branches are better than a red carpet!  This is the lord of the universe coming through into Jerusalem riding a donkey’s colt, and he will soon give his life as an atonement or sacrifice for you and me.  Do you see how impossibly magnificent all this is?!  Take a moment to reflect on this, won’t you?
