“Jesus told this simple story, but they had no idea what he was talking about. So he tried again. “I’ll be explicit, then. I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good—sheep stealers, every one of them. But the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture. A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”
John 10:10 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.
How much more clearer could it have been said? Was it too bizarre a concept to fathom? Was it too abstract? Is it the very nature of the directness of the message that is baffling to people even today? “I am the Gate” Jesus said. “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” With hindsight, we know that the grave could not hold this man called Jesus. Will you believe today that surely there must be something to all the claims he has made?Â
