I pulled you in from all over the world, called you in from every dark corner of the earth, Telling you, ‘You’re my servant, serving on my side. I’ve picked you. I haven’t dropped you.’ Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.”

Words of comfort, consolation, encouragement, and promise. Israel is the beneficiary of these words, and yet, I wish to claim them for myself as well. “I haven’t dropped you… I’m with you.” Who among us wouldn’t wish to be reassured with such words? May it be that the God of Israel is yours as well.

December 27, Matthew 28:19

“Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

This is the Great Commission: go out into the world and preach the good news! This is not something you want to keep to yourself; rather, you want to share it with as many as you can throughout the course of your lifetime. And the promise that Jesus has to the believer is a simple and straightforward one: you are not alone in this endeavor, no, Jesus himself is with you even as you share this good news with one and all. Are you willing to take up this great commission?
