December 11, Hebrews 11:1

“The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd.”

Hebrews 11:1 MSGA verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

A firm foundation.  That is what this business of faith is to the believer.  Writing to a predominantly Jewish audience, the author of this book is exhorting the early Christians to look back into their history and remind themselves of their journey as a people thus far — a journey based on faith.  In our present post-covenant and post-modern day, this ought to take on an even greater meaning for those who have believed in the saving power of the grace of God made freely available to one and all, and ought to continue to be a guiding principle and foundation to our daily life and living.
