“…stranger, I wish I knew…”

Love and a Question
by Robert Frost
A Stranger came to the door at eve,
And he spoke the bridegroom fair.
He bore a green-white stick in his hand,
   And, for all burden, care.
He asked with the eyes more than the lips
For a shelter for the night,
And he turned and looked at the road afar
   Without a window light.
The bridegroom came forth into the porch
With, ‘Let us look at the sky,
And question what of the night to be,
   Stranger, you and I.’
The woodbine leaves littered the yard,
   The woodbine berries were blue,
Autumn, yes, winter was in the wind;
   ‘Stranger, I wish I knew.’
Within, the bride in the dusk alone
   Bent over the open fire,
Her face rose-red with the glowing coal
And the thought of the heart’s desire.
The bridegroom looked at the weary road,
   Yet saw but her within,
And wished her heart in a case of gold
And pinned with a silver pin.
The bridegroom thought it little to give
A dole of bread, a purse,
A heartfelt prayer for the poor of God,
   Or for the rich a curse;
But whether or not a man was asked
To mar the love of two
By harboring woe in the bridal house,
   The bridegroom wished he knew.

November 25, Luke 19:10

“Jesus said, “Today is salvation day in this home! Here he is: Zacchaeus, son of Abraham! For the Son of Man came to find and restore the lost.””

Luke 19:10 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

Jesus’ words ring true even today.  He comes to find and restore the lost.  Sometimes, the lost don’t even realize they are lost, and they aren’t even looking — unless, of course, they’re looking like Zacchaeus was looking — from the sidelines.  And then, they realize that Jesus has come to them, for them.

“Still Mind” – A Self-portrait

When words aren’t enough, pictures are made to help communicate one’s thoughts. A most awesome marriage of the two in this piece by my firstborn.

November 24, I Chronicles 16:34

“Give thanks to God — he is good and his love never quits. Say, “Save us, Savior God, round us up and get us out of these godless places, So we can give thanks to your holy Name, and bask in your life of praise.””

1 Chronicles 16:34 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

His love never quits! How much more simple an assurance can one find?  It never quits; it never gives up on you; it is always there; it is eternal.  When this sinks in completely, take a moment to consider what the appropriate response to such a love ought to be?  It ought to be one of gratitude, plain and simple.  So, let us give thanks to God because he is good and his love never quits.
