December 19, Romans 14: 17-18

God’s kingdom isn’t a matter of what you put in your stomach, for goodness’ sake. It’s what God does with your life as he sets it right, puts it together, and completes it with joy. Your task is to single-mindedly serve Christ. Do that and you’ll kill two birds with one stone: pleasing the God above you and proving your worth to the people around you.”

Romans 14: 17-18 MSGA verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

Don’t get caught up in the business of deciding on what is good or bad to eat.  What a waste of time all that is!  Focus instead on ministering to the people around you, and you will find satisfaction and will please God.

December 18, Hebrews 4:16

Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy, accept the help.”

Hebrews 4:16 MSGA verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

Whatever you’re going through, however you’re feeling, whatever you think you are experiencing — take heart in the knowledge that Jesus “this great High Priest with ready access to God” has already been there before you.  Do you believe it?  If you do, step up to accept the help that is there for the asking.

December 17, Psalm 63:1

“God—you’re my God!
I can’t get enough of you!
I’ve worked up such hunger and thirst for God,
traveling across dry and weary deserts.”

Psalm 63:1 MSGA verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

Do you have a hunger and thirst like David did?  Have you tried to quench it?  How so?

December 16, Hebrews 11:6

“By an act of faith, Enoch skipped death completely. “They looked all over and couldn’t find him because God had taken him.” We know on the basis of reliable testimony that before he was taken “he pleased God.” It’s impossible to please God apart from faith. And why? Because anyone who wants to approach God must believe both that he exists and that he cares enough to respond to those who seek him.”

Hebrews 11:6 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

It’s a two-pronged approach to God that the author recommends:  first comes belief in his existence, and then comes more belief in his love for you.  You must do both!

December 15, James 3:9-10

“This is scary: You can tame a tiger, but you can’t tame a tongue—it’s never been done. The tongue runs wild, a wanton killer. With our tongues we bless God our Father; with the same tongues we curse the very men and women he made in his image. Curses and blessings out of the same mouth!”

James 3:9-10 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

An amazing organ that multitasks like crazy, wouldn’t you say? But actually, the tongue is an organ that only does the bidding of the head and the heart.  So if you are serious about wanting to “tame the tongue,” you may wish to check what’s in the head and the heart, and make some changes there so as to allow the tongue to behave better. 🙂

December 14, 1 John 5:14-15

“My purpose in writing is simply this: that you who believe in God’s Son will know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you have eternal life, the reality and not the illusion. And how bold and free we then become in his presence, freely asking according to his will, sure that he’s listening. And if we’re confident that he’s listening, we know that what we’ve asked for is as good as ours.”

1 John 5:14-15 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

What beautiful confidence!  I think it may take me a lifetime to gain this type of confidence, but it is something that I aspire for.  I hope the same is true for you.

December 13, 2 Corinthians 12:9

“Because of the extravagance of those revelations, and so I wouldn’t get a big head, I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations. Satan’s angel did his best to get me down; what he in fact did was push me to my knees. No danger then of walking around high and mighty! At first I didn’t think of it as a gift, and begged God to remove it. Three times I did that, and then he told me, My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness. Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ’s strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

This is a faith of paradoxes.  Paul is saying he is strong when he is weak, and that he appreciates the “gift” of being “cut down to size”.  Is that not amazing?  This is the effect of the gospel of Christ that works within us:  it makes us trust in the promises of God who comforts us with the words, “My grace is enough; it’s all you need.”  And when we are accepting, nay, welcoming of the many trials in our life’s journey, we too will be able to say with confidence, “the weaker I get, the stronger I become.”

December 12, Acts 20:24

“But there is another urgency before me now. I feel compelled to go to Jerusalem. I’m completely in the dark about what will happen when I get there. I do know that it won’t be any picnic, for the Holy Spirit has let me know repeatedly and clearly that there are hard times and imprisonment ahead. But that matters little. What matters most to me is to finish what God started: the job the Master Jesus gave me of letting everyone I meet know all about this incredibly extravagant generosity of God.

Acts 20:24 MSGA verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

This was Luke’s mission in life:  to finish what God started in him, which was to preach the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  And so, he does just that:  going far and wide to tell about “this incredibly extravagant generosity.”  What is your mission in life?
