Sweet Jasmine: Thriving Season After Season

This is a post that was first published in my private blog on Friday, June 6, 2008 titled simply ‘Sweet Jasmine’.  I reproduce it again three years later to celebrate the beauty of this plant that was just moved out to my front porch a couple weeks ago thanks to the onset of warmer weather.  The beauty of the plant and the story behind it is one for the files!  It is also one that is apropos for the day today:  a day eighteen years ago today that I decided to say ‘I Do’ to a man as sweet as the fragrance of these jasmines.  By the way, my wedding was full of jasmines in all the decorations everywhere.  Original post follows:

Here’s a picture story of my lovely jasmine plant, which is really my firstborn’s, but I suppose she and I are the ones who care for it, and therefore I feel somewhat possessive about it.

And possessive is only one of many things that I feel about it— I feel a sense of wonder in knowing that this lovely plant sitting on my kitchen windowsill came into being with a lowly cutting from a large ‘mother plant’ all the way back in India; I feel a sense of awe in my mother’s bold and scheming ways in how she smuggled that little plant cutting into the shores of this country four years ago (summer of 2005), right under the very noses of the US Dept. of Agriculture, the vigilante agency that patrols every port to ensure that no fruits, flowers or plants enter for fear of disease and such; I feel a sense of great nostalgia for my childhood memories of the jasmine bush in the corner of our front lawn that put on a production all summer long, and for the long garlands we wove to wear in our hair (and we wove it the proper way with only the string, no needles please!); and finally, I feel a sense of being immersed in pure beauty–crisp and white and fragile and fragrant–flooding the kitchen and even the rest of the house.

Sweet jasmine, you are fleeting in your beauty, but everlasting in your determination to come back year after year, no matter where you’re planted.

From these pictures, you can’t smell the sweet fragrance, but you can see the sweet buds and blooms as they slowly unfold their petals. This is yet another show that I hope will go on…
And for old times’ sake, here’s a picture of my firstborn sitting in the front lawn of my childhood home with the jasmines from the big jasmine plant in her hair!

A Peony Party Three Years Ago: Just As Sweet Even Today!

This is a post first published in my private blog three years ago around this time, June 8, 2008, to be precise.  I offer it here today in remembrance of the lovely visit to the Arb that we paid last weekend.  The peonies had already peaked, but walking through these gardens was just as pleasant.  Isn’t it great to know that some shows like these are guaranteed year after year?  These are certainly shows that must and will go on.  Original article follows…

Peony Party in the Arboretum

So, if you’re a peony lover, what’s not to love about an annual event that celebrates a hundred different varieties of this lovely flower?  Well, yesterday was just the day to do that:  the Nichols Arboretum hosted a ‘Peony Peaking’ event to view the many flowers at the height (or peak) of their blooms in the peony garden, a vast expanse of clearing in the otherwise forest-like area of the Arb.  It was also interesting to note that this garden has the distinction of housing the largest number of varieties of the peony flower in the United States.  Pretty cool, when you think about it, and when you actually see them!  Oh, by the way, it was an extremely hot day yesterday, with temperatures also peaking into the mid-90s, but I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.  See pictures of the Arb and the paths leading up to the peony garden, and of course, the lovely peonies in all their peaking glory!

Shakespeare In The Arb: Outdoor Theatre Par Excellence

An annual event in the beautiful arboretum in town. This year’s production was A Winter’s Tale. Lots of moving around the Arb for each act. You certainly get your exercise alongside your entertainment.

Ann Arbor Summer Festival: A Good Place To Volunteer

Last evening, my sweet husband and I were volunteers here! Another great annual tradition in AA, and in our household.

A To-Do List: Because School's Out For The Summer!

That’s right:  school is out for the summer.  And what does that mean, really?  Well, it means taking stock of the hours in the day that are now all your own, and establishing priorities on what you wish to do with all this delicious time on your hands.

And if you have just turned the invincible age of fifteen a week ago, what might some of those priorities be, you ask?

Well, take a look at this to-do list drawn up by my secondborn to get an idea for how absolutely brilliant life can be in the summer!  It won’t take long to see where the focus of her energies lies!

And despite the perceived imbalance of self-assigned tasks on this to-do list, I cannot help but be a little envious of it!  Read, run, eat, read some more, and of course, *not* kill anyone are indisputably laudable goals for the day!  Oh, and do some artwork, and some cooking, and perhaps even some schoolwork– could life get any better than that?!

A fine show this is:  the show called Summer.  Would that it would last forever, but then again, maybe not…!

A Mere 101 Things: A List For Father's Day!

That was what my firstborn had to tell her father on this most recent Father’s Day.  She drew up a list of 101 things that she told her father she is thankful for!  Needless to say, her father was a puddle before he could get to the end of this list!

And although the list is not reproduced here, these images will tell you just how special a love-offering this was!  I am told that this is sure to hang in a very prominent place in our bedroom in order to remind this lucky father that his most important job ever is this exactly:  to continue with the 101 things and to add to them, if possible!

Happy Father’s Day, SSI!  You’re the best!
