Sand Art: An Intricately Beautiful Artform

Some years back, we had the pleasure of touring the Grand Canyon and the desert country in the southwest part of the United States.  I stopped at this one small Trading Post, and found these two pieces of exquisitely rendered stick-figures in the sandart tradition.  They are signed and dated by a Native American artist in 1968.  I display them with great fondness for the unique art form that they represent, as well as for the beautiful memories from that trip.  Enjoy!

Shirin Neshat on Winter: The Cold Season in Poetry and Film

When my trust hung from the thin thread of justice
And the hearts of my lamps were smashed into tiny pieces
All over town
And the childlike eyes of my love were blindfolded
With the black kerchief of law
When blood was gushing forth from the anxious temples of my desire
When my life was nothing other than the ticking of the clock
I realized that I must love
That I must madly love.

This is an excerpt from the poem “Window” (1967) by Forugh Farrokhzad, translated by Farzaneh Milani from the Persian. Shirin Neshat is an artist and director of the film “Women Without Men.”

Beautiful Batik Woman: Exquisite Form Within and Without

Some years ago, I was traveling through Jakarta, Indonesia, and picked up this exquisite piece of art which was essentialy a piece of fabric with this vivid scenery:  a woman in the center of the universe, it seemed to appear to me.  I brought it back home, took it to my local framing-shop, picked out a frame, and two sets of mats (different colors and textures, yes!), chose a non-glare glass, and had it framed for the price of a car-loan payment for the month.

But no regrets, because the piece of fabric has been transformed into an amazing work of art, and over the years has found a home on various walls within my house, the current location being one of my walls of my bedroom.  Jakarta Woman, you’re one of a kind!

A Spiral for Fall: To Give and to Receive

My husband brought this home just now as a ‘just because’ present! All we needed was to find a push-pin to hang it up!

P.S. Did I mention I never cease to be amazed?!
