June 11, Philippians 1:9-10

“So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well. Learn to love appropriately. You need to use your head and test your feelings so that your love is sincere and intelligent, not sentimental gush. Live a lover’s life, circumspect and exemplary, a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul, making Jesus Christ attractive to all, getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God.”

Philippians 1:9-10 MSGA verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

Have you read this?  Have you really read this?  This is Paul writing to the early Christians in what is now modern-day Greece — and by extension to each and every Christ-follower today — to live a life that speaks and looks like Jesus in action, i.e., love in action.  The first and foremost exhortation is to love — but how?  Not just lip-service love, nay, but love that is sincere and real. Make it real, people!  When you look at a person and talk with them, make it real!  And go a step more:  show how your words can take the shape of action to help the other.  Reflect the greatest lover of all, Jesus, i.e., God incarnate.  Like Paul says, this is my prayer for you too, even as it is for myself!

June 10, John 1:5

“Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!— came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.”

John 1:5 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

I’m thinking this is exactly what happens to a believer too — when the Light of Life shines within you, it shines within you.  It may shine bright at times, and brighter at other times; it may shine dimly at times, but it never goes out.  The darkness can never put it out.  Isn’t that a most astounding thought? This is John, Jesus’ friend, companion, disciple, and author of the gospel of John describing the power of the Almighty personified in Jesus as God incarnate, as the Light of Life. Do you, gentle reader, have the Light shining within you?
