February 16, Philippians 4:13

“I’m glad in God, far happier than you would ever guess—happy that you’re again showing such strong concern for me.  Not that you ever quit praying and thinking about me. You just had no chance to show it.  Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally.  I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances.  I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty.  Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. I don’t mean that your help didn’t mean a lot to me—it did. It was a beautiful thing that you came alongside me in my troubles.

Philippians 4:13 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

The other day, I was reading something that asked the question about which person (deceased or living) I would most like to meet, and having thought about it for a bit, I decided my answer was:  Paul.  What an amazing man he must have been!  Quick to encourage his readers in the Christian walk, and quick to lead by example, this is a man to emulate.  Here, Paul offers his “recipe for being happy” which is to be content in all seasons.  He is quick to say, though, that he is not ungrateful for all the help he has received.  May it be that like Paul, we also appreciate his recipe for happiness even as we strive to give each other a helping hand.

February 15, Jeremiah 17:10

“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out. But I, God, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be.”

Jeremiah 17:10 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

This is God himself offering an analysis of the human heart.  And he thinks the human heart is “hopelessly dark and deceitful.”  Not a stellar commentary on the state of human beings.  And yet, this is a God that doesn’t just write us off.  To think that God himself would deign to analyze, examine, search, consider, and still choose to pursue us, love us, accept us, and draw us close to himself is an incomprehensible thought.  Does that not strike you as amazing?

February 14, John 15:13

““I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.”

John 15:13 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

What a magnificent promise! And what a magnificent sense of confidence for the believer!  Jesus is my friend.  And one who has already given his life for me.  This is the gold standard for friendship, by the way:  “put your life on the line for your friends”.  Can you do that?  It is also the height of love.
