Contagion, 2011

When a virus enters a population with stealth, there is soon panic in the streets.  A more deadly weapon of mass destruction is hard to imagine especially when you see the devastation that such a virus can wreak upon villages, towns and cities in a matter of days.

Fascinating thriller about a killer virus that hops on a plane and decimates large cities in America.  And for a change, there is no evil scientist in the story, thank goodness.  What there is instead is a fast-paced storyline that jumps from the WHO HQ in Geneva to the offices of the CDC in Atlanta, to a number of big cities across the US.  A pandemic is not a pretty thing, that is for sure, and the other thing that you learn soon enough is that it brings out the worst in people– and that is not by any means a reference to the status of their physical health.

With a star cast of Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard, among others, this is a well-made movie that will make you grateful for the advances in medicine that allow for vaccines to be developed at the speed that they are.  It may also make you go stockpile on the hand sanitizer.
