Ann Arbor Man Accused of Running Over Ducklings Faces Felony Charge

Watch where you’re going, people!  You might just get four years in the slammer if you’re convicted of running over ducklings!

Ann Arbor police said Pearce deliberately ran over the ducklings in the parking lot of the McDonald’s at 2675 Plymouth Road, where he initially stopped to pick up food at 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Police said Pearce stopped at the drive-thru, when one of his friends got out and attempted to pick up a duckling. A duck and at least 8 ducklings had been walking in the lot, police said. Employees at McDonald’s yelled at the man to stop, police said.

The man got back into the Hummer, which left the parking lot, pulling into an adjacent lot for about 15 minutes while the men ate their food, police said. Witnesses told police that the Hummer then returned to the lot and ran over four of the ducklings, police said. Police said Pearce drove away without stopping. Officers arrested Pearce at a nearby gas station after interviewing him and the two other men in the Hummer.

At his arraignment this afternoon, Pearce told Magistrate Thomas Truesdell that he planned to hire a private attorney. Truesdell set bond at $5,000 with the right to post 10 percent.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 4. If convicted of the felony charge, Pearce faces up to four years in prison.

To Pressure-Cook or NOT to Pressure-Cook: That Is the Question!

Well, if you know what a pressure-cooker is, you most likely are from the Indian subcontinent.  Simple as dal!  No Indian kitchen worth its salt would be without one– seriously!  And if it doesn’t have one, then I am here to tell you right here and right now, that such an Indian kitchen is an ill-equipped one, nay, it couldn’t be Indian at all!

A pressure-cooker in an Indian kitchen is just one of those utensils that is used for everything from cooking lentils to meats, and sometimes even veggies.  So, yes, of course, I have a pressure-cooker, and of course, I use it most flamboyantly, but the fact is that I don’t use it so much for cooking my vegetable dishes, or subzis, as they are called.  The reason for this is because there’s a fine line between cooking your veggies to be fork-tender, to rendering them into a mush– the latter being altogether undesirable!

And so, a much experienced user of the pressure-cooker would know just how to cook those veggies to the right texture– soft and tender, and flavorful with all the seasonings without  so much as letting a single piece fall apart.

Which is what I did yesterday.  This delectable subzi of baby eggplant, baby carrots and yukon gold potatoes went into a seasoning of onions, garlic, aamchur, and some garam masala to be stir-fried for a bit, before a cup of hot water was added to it, and the lid of the pressure-cooker firmly put into place for exactly seven minutes.  Turn off the fire, let it sit for another ten minutes before you open the lid, and when you do, prepare to be assaulted by an aroma so fragrant and delicious that you will want to get started with dinner rightaway, whether or not its time!

The sun will eclipse the brightest of street-lamps in the day, of course, but at night, I’ll bet these two lamps lined up on both sides of the street in the Tech Town area of the WSU campus in Midtown Detroit will offer more than ample light to pedestrians on the sidewalk.  Note to LP:  there’s your pole!

Blueberry Cheesecake Extraordinare: Not Available In Stores!

Holidays are occasions for grand productions in the kitchen so as to produce grand results on the table.  The most recent holiday commonly known as Easter was the latest such occasion for one such production.  But each production has a pièce de résistance, and in this case, it was dessert.  And no ordinary dessert was this:  it was a most decadent German Cheesecake made in the authentic style of no-crust and having cottage-cheese as a dominant ingredient.  Plus, it was made from scratch with the most wholesome ingredients, no preservatives or artificial anything, thank you very much, and made with all the love we (i.e., my firstborn and I) could spare in an exercise of this magnitude!

And if you think all this is too divine and couldn’t get any better than that, well, it actually could– and did– thanks to the magnificent garnish of the freshest of fresh blueberries that we topped it with.  Strawberries are so passe, we think, and so blueberries it was!

See for yourself what I mean!

Fast facts: Malaria [infographic] | WORLD VISION BLOG

In honor of World Malaria Day, observed every year on April 25 as a day of awareness and recognition for global efforts to end malaria, we challenge you to educate yourself on the facts, raise awareness, and take action against this deadly but preventable disease.

Malaria is a disease of massive proportions that disproportionately impacts children. Each year, approximately 780,000 people die from malaria, 85 percent of whom are children under 5. World Vision works in 62 countries affected by malaria, 23 of which are in Africa.

Impact on children and families

  • Malaria is the 4th leading cause of death for children globally, and is a leading cause of death for children in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • More than 1,800 children under 5 die each day from malaria. That’s approximately 1 child every 45 seconds.
  • Half of the world’s population is at risk of malaria: There are 106 malaria-endemic countries with 3.3 billion people at risk. Malaria infects approximately 250 million people each year.
  • Malaria has been estimated to cost Africa more than U.S. $12 billion every year in lost economic productivity, and can cost households as much as 32 percent of their entire monthly income.
  • Insecticide-treated bed nets could prevent as many as 1 million deaths from all causes of malaria for children under 5.

Global malaria prevention

  • If universal malaria prevention can be achieved by 2010 and maintained until 2015, an estimated 2.95 million African children’s lives can be saved.
  •  If current scale-up trends are maintained until 2015, 1.14 million African children’s lives can be saved.
  • If funding ceases and prevention levels are allowed to fall, an estimated 476,000 additional children would die.

Ways to take action against malaria

  • Join World Vision ACT:S and RELEVANT Magazine in their campaign to end malaria by 2015.
  • Ask your elected officials to prioritize funding for malaria programs. Use this easy online action form to send an email.
  • Help provide insecticide-treated bed nets to save more children from the deadly bite of mosquitoes.
  • Pray for the millions who live in the world’s malaria-prone regions, who remain at risk from this deadly disease. Pray for the collective will within the United States and internationally to eradicate this preventable, treatable disease once and for all.

Yeh Saali Zindagi, 2011

It’s a good thing I had time to spare to watch this all the way through, because had it been any other day than an easy Sunday afternoon, I would have most certainly nixed it after the first couple hours.  And not necessarily because I’d be short on time, but also because I might not have been in quite so indulgent a mood so as to tolerate a most convoluted gangster drama with a perennial flow of plots and subplots galore, and flashbacks and more flashbacks to boot.

But had I stayed, it would have been more for the views of the city of Delhi, both the old and new sides of the city that I called home for a short while in the early Nineties.  And if the dynamic between Irfaan Khan and his love interest weren’t so compelling, well, there was more than enough compensation for that with the other couple, the gangster Kuldeep and his wife who exhibited the classic case of ‘can’t live with him and can’t live without him’.

All in all, a forgettable film.  Except for all the choice gaalis that were sprinkled more liberally than chaat-masala on chaat.

Beautiful crocus in my front yard.  Blooms every year whether or not I notice.  But how can one not notice such fragile and fleeting beauty?  Here today, gone tomorrow, but sure to return again next year!
