The Blindside, 2009

Blindside

Blindsided by the power of love that transforms not just the recipient of the love but the giver of it!

A story like this will never get old and is universal to the human condition across every continent and every race– my own folks being another example of having devoted their lives to caring for desperately poor children in India over the last thirty years.  The football angle makes the movie funny and uplifting.

Go see it if you want to feel good about the capacity to do good– sometimes from the most unexpected of sources.

Paa, 2009

Paa

High marks for building up and sustaining the underlying theme of forgiveness; low marks for the predictable plot without any significant elements of surprise, and finally, a flaccid anti-climactic ending.

BTW, that Vidya Balan is a lovely-looking girl!

Nine, 2009

Nine

Big Broadway musical is what it is. Slow story. Lovely ladies. Most convincing performance by Guido's wife (Ms. Cruz).

Guido (Day Lewis) is every man in some ways: influenced by all the women in his life and yet tortured, nay, self-tortured soul in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Grandiose the performances are– to the point of looking jaded at times. Guido's wife is the only one who finds herself in the end.

Conclusion: women rock. With or without men!

Sherlock Holmes, 2009

Not what I’d expected, but I’m not complaining!

I always thought Holmes was older and not quite as strong and athletic, and Watson not such a pretty face, but hey, it works for me in the movie! Great action-adventure type crime-solving throughout, terrific slo-mo sequences for flashbacks and flashforwards, and one heck of a super-hero style fighting on the half-finished London Bridge.

Robert Downey Jr., you’ve done very well, dear sir; and I predict a sequel down the road!

3 Idiots, 2009

3-idiots03

Papa kehtein hain bada naam karega… this is the theme of this movie, and it couldn't be more apropos for Aamir Khan to have come full circle from his debut in QSQT to his sweet and funny performance in this one. And don't be fooled by the title, he's anything but the idiot, and if he is, well, then, he's gotta be the sweetest one around!

Funny and entertaining, and a small departure from the usual masala movie, it'll crack you up if you know your Hindi idioms!

And as for Boman Irani, did I mention I ran into him at a Starbucks in NYC last May and shook hands with the man?!

Up In The Air, 2009

Up-in-the-air_1561248i

"We are not swans; we are all sharks." That's what Clooney, the motivational speaker/corporate layoff consultant tells his audience.  Something to think about…

Multi-layered in themes with a brilliant performance by Clooney, the movie is a reminder about how complex the human condition is– on the professional and the personal fronts. Nothing simple to it ever.

The Curse Of The Jade Scorpion, 2001

Quirky Woody Allen humor that always cracks me up, even when he's saying the most ordinary things!

Sweet story of a dorky guy who gets the pretty girl in the end, against all odds.
