January 5, Isaiah 29:13

“The Master said: “These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their hearts aren’t in it. Because they act like they’re worshiping me but don’t mean it, I’m going to step in and shock them awake, astonish them, stand them on their ears. The wise ones who had it all figured out will be exposed as fools. The smart people who thought they knew everything will turn out to know nothing.””

Isaiah 29:13 MSG – A verse of the day from the Bible presented in Eugene Peterson’s contemporary version called The Message. Accompanied by a personal reflection below.

Are you also going through the motions?  Is your heart in the right place?  Do you think you are so smart?  Here’s something to think about:  “the smart people who thought they knew everything will turn out to know nothing.”  May it be that you and I are not considered smart in this sense.  May it be that we are sincere in our love of God and in our service to man.

“…and not to think of any misery in the sound of the wind…”

Poem of the Day: The Snow Man

by Wallace Stevens
One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;
And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter
Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,
Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place
For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.
