This reminds me of the concept of detachment in Al Anon: caring for others but not to the extent that we enter into our own addiction or illness. It’s putting ourselves first, not in a selfish way, but in order to be able to care and serve.
Yes, I am sure there are many similar concepts in Al-Anon. What you say is easier said than done because there is always the greater likelihood that the practitioners meaning the counselors and therapists are prone to being impacted in negative ways themselves. That is why concepts such as vicarious traumatization are covered.
Sometimes I feel I am suffering from compassion fatigue.
I’m sorry to hear that. I didn’t mean to communicate that it’s easy because I think it’s just the opposite! In Al Anon it’s a life-long process and is one step forward, one step back, etc. etc. I don’t think anyone fully succeeds at it and no one is expected to.
